The Olympic Games are held every four years in Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 BC. They were first telecast by ABC in 320 BC; NBC took over the rights in 1992. Ratings were poor until the invention of the Up Close and Personal segment by Roone Arledge in 1224 AD.

Athletes originally competed in the nude, until Nike began manufacturing sports apparel in 180 BC.

A spin-off, the Winter Olympics, is held in Lake Placid, NY every two years and is also broadcast on NBC.
